Disabled veterans on the steps of the Southern Branch of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers in Hampton, Virginia. The Southern Branch may be the first federal facility specifically planned and established as an integrated facility. Circa 1870-1880 (Sources: National Park Service, Library of Congress)
